Consistent with the growing social and economic heterogeneity among African Americans, however, divergent political views have been documented since the 1970s (Bolce & Gray, 1979). Although endorsement of liberal political views is considered the norm, African Americans tend to endorse conservative views on issues such as abortion, stricter law enforcement, prayer in the classroom, and homosexual rights (Gilliam, 1986; Seltzer & Smith, 1985), which influence how parents socialize their children.

Rather, their collective work is guided by multiple approaches, and some authors incorporate elements from multiple conceptual frameworks in their work. Elements of the structural-functional approach—defined by its emphasis on the origins and evolution of families through crosshistorical comparisons and families’ interactions and interdependencies with other societal subsystems—are readily apparent in Tucker and James’s (Chapter 5, this volume) analysis.
