That’s what it’s all about . —JOHN SEXTON Your artistic intent for a particular photograph or other work of art is related to the reaction you wish to achieve from a viewer. The artistic intent can be the look or feel of the final print, or it can be an emotion or message that you wish to convey with the print. Artistic intent is by definition subjective to the artist. In other words, the feeling, thought, or emotion you wish to evoke with a print is entirely up to you. For example, if you desire a dark and moody feel for your print, then a successful final print should convey this feeling, such as by producing a final print that is darker and with deeper shadows.

They are pretty inexpensive and can provide you with insight as to the actual conditions in your studio and how it compares to the optimal range. FIGURE 2-5: A Caliber III hygrometer that measures temperature and humidity, a little worse for wear but still functional. A new one should cost less than $30. Over time, once you know your humidity level, you can decide what approach to take. My printing studio is in a basement on the coast of Maine and the humidity as I type this is about 47% and within specs, which is typical for the winter with my setup.

And if you insist on putting your screens in front of a bright window like I do, I recommend covering the window with curtains or a piece of cardboard while editing to control the lighting. Environmental Conditions Sometimes we take modern inkjet printers for granted because of their competence and reliability. Modern printers, though, are incredibly complex machines, particularly with respect to the printheads. Each printer and its printheads are designed for a particular range of environmental conditions, including temperature and humidity.
