For example, evolving human aspirations for liberation and self-expression tend to stand in contradiction with instituted practices of material production and reproduction of class societies as well as political forms of domination. At the same time, the claim is that social-historical dynamics, which are the object of analysis of critical social science, are determined by the antagonisms that are generated by these contradictions. In this context, social scientific knowledge is not generated by the positivist identification of invariant laws, but rather through an intellectual conceptual “mapping” (or reconstruction) of contradictory social formations and their movement.

Hegemonic practices are precisely the object of analysis of the critical political economy, the premises of which are outlined in the concluding section of the chapter. THE “CLASSICAL” DEBATE OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION: LIBERALISM VERSUS REALISM Theoretical frameworks, through the logic of their internally consistent conceptual frameworks and their reflexivity with regards to assumptions, help us make sense of the nature and interconnections of reality. At the same time, insofar as hermeneutics (following a basic insight of Kant’s) is correct to argue that observation cannot be separated from conception,) theoretical frameworks can also distort reality and prevent us from seeing things or even asking the important questions.

In fact, the contradiction between the global and the national is the manifestation at the level of capitalism as a global system of the basic contradiction between socialization of productive forces and the private appropriation of surplus. By formulating our queries in this way, we make class our central analytic category. This enables us to transcend the distinction between the national and the international. The international division of labor then becomes the social network through which production relations spread and class formation is nationalized, in other words the process through which global class formation is articulated with the processes of nation building and state formation.
